The night my daughter was born I went home to get some sleep, and after tucking in her three older brothers, I sat down at our piano and wrote this song. Her whole life was flashing through my eyes…well, my dream of her life anyway. This brand new tiny baby girl, who couldn’t even communicate with me at all, instantly stole my heart. All I wanted to do was make sure I loved her as well as possible, through every stage of her life, and the verses and chorus combination of this song was my heart that night. Later, after realizing the true pains of her growing older and more independent, I was able to write the bridge.
UPDATE: My daughter is absolutely amazing. She’s now a loving and caring woman. She’s extremely talented in many ways and works hard at whatever she does. She’s a fun and sweet younger sister to her brothers. And now, she is married to a man I deeply respect and love. BUT, regardless of her age and marital status, just like in my dreams…she’s still my baby girl.
For almost twenty years I lived with the hope that we would dance together to this song on her wedding day…you know, during the traditional Father/Daughter dance at the reception. I knew this would require a recorded version of this song that would meet the standards of a beautiful wedding, if it were to happen at all. I certainly didn’t want to push my own agenda, but secretly conspired about the possibility of surprising her with it regardless of what song she chose. And then one day, as the wedding drew closer, she asked me my hearts desire, “Pa”…that’s what she calls me…”can we dance to My Baby Girl at the wedding?” And then we did. And it was wonderful.

My Baby Girl
Music & Lyrics by Lee Langdon
Just a baby Wrapped in a blanket
Brand new to this crazy world
Sleeping so peaceful
Wrapped in her blanket
Oh what a beautiful girl
I knew that I loved you
The first time I saw you
I never thought that something so small
Could steal my heart away at all
Just a baby
All dressed up for school
With pigtails and curls held up in bows
We pray together
Before she leaves for school
And I tell her again before she goes
I knew that I loved you
The first time I saw you
I never thought that something so small
Could steal my heart away at all
Oh baby
You'll always be my baby girl
Just a baby
Packing her suitcase
It's time to go explore the world alone
I help my baby
Put clothes in her suitcase
And the words I feel just
Come out on their own
I knew that I loved you
The first time I saw you
I never thought that something so small
Could steal my heart away at all
Oh baby
You'll always be my baby girl
How quickly the time goes by
Is there anyway to slow it down
I’m so proud of you my baby girl
You bring so much joy to me
I just wish I had more time
Now my baby
Is walking beside me
Slowly down the aisle on my arm
This is my moment
To give her away
But tears come rushing down
When I hear her say
You knew that you loved me
The first time you saw me
You never thought that something so small
Could steal your heart away at all
Oh Daddy
Oh Daddy
Oh Daddy
I’ll always be your baby girl
Yes, you’ll always be my baby girl
