What’s Your Name

hello my name is

Why are you here?
What is the purpose of your life?
How are you spending the time you have been given?
When the time comes to move on from this life, will you be ready?

These are some important questions to consider. Seriously…it’s a good idea to wrestle a bit with these.

Each year I spend time in June with high school students in a local coffee shop discussing a C. S. Lewis book, just to go a little deeper theologically and prime their heart pumps. My favorite book of his to discuss is Mere Christianity (1952). C. S. Lewis does a wonderful job helping people wrestle with these types of questions. You could start there if you don’t mind reading with a British accent.

Eventually you will need to consider your worldview. You know, the way you view the world. You could call it a filter. If your identity is wrapped up in Jesus (like mine) then your worldview will typically begin with Genesis chapter one of the bible where we are introduced to God, the creator of all mankind and everything. If you choose to understand your origin and view the world outside of God and the bible, then your worldview will have to stem from somewhere else, say…another religion, or materialism, or something else. They are not all the same and it makes a big difference what you believe. Nor are they all true; that would be simply impossible.

I choose Jesus. I believe he is real, the truth, and alive, currently sitting at the right hand of the Father God I read about in the bible.

But everyone needs to search for answers to tough questions about life and death (and purpose, etc.) a bit on their own, and sometimes it’s helpful to be guided along the way by someone you trust. I hope you will search for truth. I believe I have found truth in Jesus, but I certainly don’t claim to know everything, nor do I have all of the answers. I just keep digging for truth. I’d love to join you on your journey if you’ll have me.

In the meantime…I have a song for you, just to get you thinking a little more.

(I wrote this song in my hot Oklahoma-July cabin during a church camp session in 2007. Recently I plopped my iPhone down and recorded it just to get it down for my grandchildren. Hey, I can hope. You may need to turn up your volume a bit.)

What’s Your Name

What’s your name
What’s your color
What’s your purpose in life
Your purpose in life
What’s your name

Do you have a moment
Can you give me an answer
What’s your purpose in life
Your purpose in life
What’s your name

Chorus
Cause’ everybody lives for something
Everybody lives for something
Everybody lives for something
What’s your name
What’s your name
La la la la

In the morning
Time to rise and shine
Where will the minutes go
No second can rewind

Top priority
On a scale of ten to one
What are you living for
What are you dying for
What’s your name
Chorus

When it’s over
Time to move on from here
Will you be ready to go
And leave your life behind
Chorus
