The Widow’s Mitey Faith
“Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, ‘I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.’” (Mark 12:43-44)
I am convinced that the story we find in the book of Mark about the widow who put two small copper coins into the temple treasury is more about faith than about giving.
The widow’s offering was not significant in amount at all; it was actually very close to nothing, pennies, merely pocket change. However, the offering was “all she had to live on”, which therefore made it an extremely significant amount to her. When she dropped those two coins into the treasury she actually dropped in her financial security, her next day meals, her lifeline.
They why did she do it? Why would she drop in all she had to live on? Doesn’t that seem a bit much? There seems to be only one viable answer and it has little to do with meeting a ten percent giving law. The answer is simply this: she fully trusted in her God. Those two coins were a faith sacrifice to God declaring her total trust in him to provide for her and take care of her every need. She was the kind of woman who prayed, “Give us today our daily bread” and meant it! Her offering was a testimony of her insurmountable real faith in her insurmountable real God.
Don’t you desire to have faith like this widow, faith that claims nothing but trust in God? Only you know in your heart how much you trust God and depend on him. Claim your faith today, and grow.
