Tertullian’s Grail
“You are to seek until you find, and once you have found, you are to believe. Thereafter, all you have to do is to hold to what you have believed.” –Tertullian
I’m not sure how Tertullian died honestly. I have learned that he lived through a pretty rough couple of years of persecution under Severus, but lived beyond those years. I have also learned that because of his dissatisfaction of the purity and order of the church of his day he joined the Montanist movement toward the end of his life, a group that demanded a rigorous moral life and declared a new age of the Spirit. Though in his quest for perfect church order, even the Montanist movement let him down and therefore he didn’t find his “holy grail” for/of the church. So, in view of this frustration, he began his own movement, they were called “Tertullianists.”
Sometimes I think I want to start my own movement too. I’m just saying…
But then again, don’t we have too many “movements” already?
